Pollute less, earn more: this is how the chains encourage consumers to recycle Israel today

2023-01-17T11:23:00.222Z

The field of recycling is not sufficiently developed in Israel, but the chains manage to convince the consumer to return old items to the store in exchange for various credits.

Awareness of recycling is increasing over the years, but is still considered very low in Israel.

Besides the insufficient awareness, there is an impact in the infrastructure sector - which is not developed enough to encourage consumers to recycle.

Usually, special product recycling activities are held on the international day, but there are chains that take steps related to this field regularly, usually with the trade-in method, in which the chain earns through a purchase.

The consumer culture makes us buy so many products, that this method can help us get rid of the old products and create a less polluting environment.

The field of fashion and care is relatively advanced compared to others when it comes to recycling.

The L'Occitane brand recently launched a new flagship store and spa in Azrieli Sharona Mall in Tel Aviv, designed according to global standards.

L'Occitane Global promises that by 2025 - 100% of product packaging in stores will be made of 100% recycled plastic.

As part of this strategy, a filling device for empty packages will be launched in Israel for the first time, so that at the end of the product's use it will soon be possible to enter this store and purchase only the contents of the package, without new packaging, thus reducing the amount of waste.

The price of the refill will be low compared to purchasing a new product and case.

"There is awareness among our customers about the issue of recycling, because we have done many campaigns related to the issue," says Stephan Belgeman, L'Occitan brand manager, "and the price is the last incentive that will cause a recycler. Obviously there is more awareness in Tel Aviv, but it is increasing throughout the country, Just like people want to know if these are natural products and who is behind the production."

Belgeman also talks about the difficulties in implementing recycling measures: "About a year ago, we did a project with Shankar, which was very successful. We encouraged returning packaging and receiving a gift, and using the packaging they created artistic objects at Shankar, which caused a great buzz. There is no industry in Israel like in France, where there is A company that collects the packaging from the stores and recycles it. We get stuck with all the packaging, and we have nothing to do with it."

The New York care brand Kill's allows you to return empty containers of the products and receive a product as a gift in return.

When you return three empty containers, you get a lip balm as a gift, when you return five empty containers, you get a travel care product in a special size (75 ml), and when you return 10 empty containers, you get a full-size product up to NIS 125.

Take out the old from the new

In the field of fashion, Nodi Jeans offers a free repair and trade-in service on old models: you can return an old Nodi and receive a second-hand Nodi for free, or a 25% discount for buying a new Nodi in the Storey network.

H&M has a recycling project that started in 2013, under which anyone can bring a bag that includes textile products from all brands to the recycling bin in the branches.

In return, the consumer receives a voucher of NIS 20 off a purchase of more than NIS 150, with a limit of up to four vouchers per delivery.

As for jewelry, the Padani luxury jewelry chain exchanges old jewelry for new jewelry, and the credit is offered according to the price and weight of the gold.

A few months ago, the Multilock Group launched a new venture called "Green Locksmith".

The company has placed recycling boxes, intended for collecting Multilock cylinders and keys, in dozens of locksmith shops all over the country.

Every customer who brings a product for recycling receives a NIS 50 discount on the purchase of a new cylinder.

The Multilock company estimates that every month more than 10,000 cylinders and 30,000 cylinder keys are thrown into the trash.

"We decided to try to motivate the locksmiths and the customers to recycle," says Shmulik Strenshus, CEO of the Multilock Group, "to date this has not appeared on their agenda.

We receive reports from the stores that the recycling boxes are full."

And in case you were wondering - it's not that simple to recycle cylinders: "A real logistics system is needed. The contents need to be collected, broken down in a factory into different metals, and more. This is not an operation designed for a commercially profitable activity, but for the benefit of our world. Although I sell it to manufacturers the metals, but the profit is almost non-existent, and there are a lot of expenses. We operate in 70 countries and sell to about 20,000 locksmiths directly."

In the field of mattresses, the Good Night chain is launching a promotion according to which those who return an old mattress receive a 10%-15% discount on the purchase of a new mattress, depending on the type of mattress purchased.

Aminach offers trade-in deals on the mattresses - up to 42% discount on the purchase of a new mattress for the old mattress.

Change mobile and immediately

A field that has many opportunities for trade in is the cellular field.

"Approximately 20% of our customers change their phone once a year, and the rest change on average every two years," notes Liron Katz, VP of Business Development at Electric Warehouses. "This need forced us to make a move in order to continue to be attractive in the competitive cellular sector.

About a year ago we started offering our customers the option to trade in their phone, of any type, up to an amount of NIS 3,500.

The phones are transferred to an international company, which refurbishes them and sells them to various countries around the world.

In light of the success of the trade-in activity in the cellular sector, this year it was decided to launch a trade-in pilot on certain model consoles, in any condition, in which you receive a discount of NIS 300."

At iDigital they offer trade-in on iPhones and Apple watches.

On the watches - with the purchase of a new watch from the 8 series or the Ultra series.

The return prices are determined according to the physical condition of the device, and are conditioned on the return of the original charger.

Sunny, the importer of Samsung to Israel, allows trade-in in its network of stores on the company's smartphones and allows you to receive a credit of up to NIS 2,300, depending on the phone model.

The cellular companies also offer trade-in options: at Partner Group you can return the old device and receive up to NIS 3,000 for it in the form of a discount on the new device or monthly refunds that are posted on the invoice;

And Pelephone offers up to NIS 3,000 on an old device in a trade-in deal, including a five-year warranty on the new device.
