A 33-year-old female nurse fell into an investment scam by mistake. Netizens falsely claimed that investing in cryptocurrencies can get rich returns. The victim was deceived into buying Tether worth nearly 2.4 million Hong Kong dollars, and then transferred the money to the cryptocurrency wallet provided by the scammer until she planned to withdraw the money When he was delayed by the other party, he knew that he was deceived and called the police.
In December last year, the female victim met a scammer on the dating app "Coffee Meets Bagel". After gaining the trust of the victim, the scammer lured the victim to invest in cryptocurrency, falsely claiming that he would get rich returns.
The victim was unaware of fraud, and purchased USD 300,000 of TEDA (nearly HKD 2.4 million) on Binance, a cryptocurrency trading platform, in December last year.
Subsequently, the scammer instructed the victim to open an account on a fake investment platform and register an account on the fake program.
Another scammer then contacted the victim, claiming to be a program customer service agent, and instructed the victim to transfer the above amount in 13 times to 3 cryptocurrency wallets provided by him.
In the same month, the victim wanted to withdraw money from the fake app, but was delayed by different excuses.
The victim eventually felt cheated and called the police.
