After water, fish and mother's milk, we learn that poultry eggs are also contaminated with PFAS in the chemical valley of Lyon.

The Rhône prefecture published on Tuesday measurements taken in the municipalities of Oullins and Pierre-Bénite, bordering Lyon, revealing a concentration up to 16 times higher than the standards in force for these perfluorinated or

“eternal pollutants”

.

The eggs in question were collected from private chicken coops.

"The presence of these PFAS in the eggs could be explained by the contamination of the soil: by pecking, the hens become contaminated, and then contaminate their eggs"

, explain the State services.

If the eggs have

"a greater capacity to concentrate PFAS than laying poultry"

, the prefecture assumes contamination of their flesh.

Pending additional studies, it is therefore recommended that residents with a chicken coop in the municipalities of Pierre-Bénite, Oullins, but also Saint-Genis-Laval and Irigny, not to eat their eggs or their poultry.

"Eternal pollutants"

These municipalities are among those placed under surveillance since the revelation last spring of the persistence of high levels of PFAS in the soils surrounding the Arkema and Daikin sites, by a survey by France 2. Behind the barbaric acronym hides a family of more than 4,000 substances highly valued for their non-stick and water-repellent properties, useful in Teflon pans, fire-fighting foams or electronic cigarette tips.

Dangerous for humans, these molecules are above all extremely persistent in the environment, which has earned them the nickname “

eternal pollutants

”.

Measures from the prefecture have established that the Arkema factory directly discharges wastewater containing PFAS into the Rhône, where fish also have high levels.

To the point that their consumption is now not recommended.

Pollution that seeps into groundwater and drinking water catchment areas.

So that at the end of the tap, the concentrations exceed the future European standard which will come into force in 2026 in about twenty municipalities in the south and west of the agglomeration.

At the national level, the government is working on an action plan to regulate PFAS in 2023. Pending a possible European ban.
