When dogs cause property damage, it can be expensive.

In the case of a dirty doormat, however, the neighbors should quickly come to an agreement.

Or maybe not?

Dogs are loyal companions with whom you have a lot of fun in everyday life and with whom you can experience a lot on walks in the fresh air and stay fit.

At the same time, you always have to take good care of your four-legged friend, you should never leave him alone in the apartment for a long time and you have to walk the dog several times a day.

"Doormat hit": Owners leave remorseful message to neighbors

From time to time it can still happen that something goes wrong in the dog business.

It's too bad if your own neighbors are affected.

The blog "Notes of Berlin", which collects notes on house doors and elsewhere in the Berlin cityscape, recently published a photo of a notice by dog owners who apologized to their neighbors for leaving their dog behind on their doormat.

"We wash it and bring the asap back," it says ruefully.

"We are sorry."

The blog posted a snippet of the notice on Instagram and smugly captioned it with the comment "unwanted scare".

“Doormat hit” – remorseful message causes reactions on Instagram

The reactions on Instagram followed promptly.

However, opinions differed greatly.

For some, apologizing to the neighbors is a polite gesture and an appropriate response.

"I think it's great.. Communication is everything.. A "mishap" can happen to anyone.." or "Great gesture!

You don't have that often these days (...) "commented someone, for example.

Others take it for granted that you don't just clean someone else's doormat, but buy a new one for your neighbors.

The post also gives some people a wink, and many seem to already know similar problems with dogs.

Puppy is not housebroken yet?

Praise for dogs important

If a mishap happens to your own dog, you shouldn't scold it.

After all, the four-legged friend can't help it and he wouldn't understand our behavior.

Even with puppies that are not yet housebroken, there is no point in scolding them when they make a mistake, on the contrary, as dog trainers explain.

Rather, praise the dog when it does something right and make sure that you can take the dog outside quickly if in doubt.

In the best-case scenario, the neighbors will quickly come to an agreement if the dog has damaged something.

Liability: Always insure dogs against damage

A (in the worst case) ruined doormat is certainly not pleasant, but from a financial point of view it is still bearable.

In the best case, the neighbors should be able to arrange this quickly and easily among themselves.

However, the fur noses can also cause greater damage and should be secured urgently for such cases, as experts advise.

Unlike cats and small animals, dogs are not covered by their owners' private liability insurance.

Bello-Police: It can get expensive without dog liability insurance

In order to protect yourself from the financial consequences, the Rhineland-Palatinate consumer advice center recommends taking out dog owner liability insurance.

According to a report by the German Press Agency (dpa) on the subject, this is not expensive with a contribution of around 50 euros per year, but it is all the more worthwhile in an emergency.

There are a few things to keep in mind when completing the contract: Consumer advocates therefore advise you to look at the small print.

Sometimes the contribution amount is made dependent on the dog breed, certain attack dog breeds are completely excluded from the benefits.

According to the report, property damage caused by the four-legged friend in a rented apartment should be insured for up to 500,000 euros, and puppies should ideally be insured for at least six months before they need their own policy.
