In recent years, the number of fraud cases in Hong Kong has increased rapidly, and even professionals have been inadvertently cheated of huge sums of money.

A female accountant was caught in an online love scam earlier. She was tricked by a "lover" into investing in foreign currency. She did not hesitate to spend all her savings and second mortgage, and even borrowed from friends and financial companies. She lost more than 27 million yuan within 7 months.

It is understood that the victim was a 54-year-old female accountant who met the scammer through the social platform Instagram in May last year, and then chatted and started an online dating relationship on the communication software Line.

After gaining the trust of the victim, the scammer lures the victim to set up a foreign currency investment account on a fraudulent website.

From July to October last year, the victim transferred about HK$10 million in 47 separate transfers according to the scammer's instructions, including savings and second-mortgage property income, to the scammer's account to recharge her investment account.

When the victim then contacted the fraudulent website to request withdrawal of money in the investment account, he was asked to remit money as an administrative fee. The victim then borrowed money from friends and financial companies from mid-October last year to January this year, and split 50% of the money according to the instructions. A transfer of about $17 million was made to the fraudster's account.

The victim finally realized that he had been deceived and reported the case to the police this month, with a total loss of about HK$27 million.
