Debris just a few meters from a kindergarten: the crash of a helicopter in the middle of a residential area in Bravory shocked people in the city near Kyiv.
Tetiana Shebika, resident:
'We heard the helicopter. It flew first. (...) We were on the first floor and first heard the hum and then a bang. That's it. Then the kindergarten caught fire. We heard an explosion and ran outside. My daughter ran to get my granddaughter - she goes to kindergarten. We were able to get them out. Everything was on fire, including the cars near building number 19. That's all we know at the moment."
The Airbus H225 helicopter had a prominent presence.
Among the victims are the Ukrainian interior minister Denys Monastyrskyj, his deputy interior minister and a state secretary.
The deputy head of the presidential office told reporters in Brovary that the politicians were heading to a section of the front.
He did not want to give any further details.
The cause of the crash was initially unclear.
The Ukrainian secret service SBU is considering three versions: a violation of flight regulations, technical problems or the targeted destruction of the helicopter.
A commission will examine the causes.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser offered Ukraine German help in investigating the crash.
Nancy Faeser, Federal Minister of the Interior:
»This appalling news in the midst of the brutal Russian war of aggression in Ukraine shows once again the endless suffering in the civilian population.
It shocks me and the entire federal government deeply.«
Chancellor Scholz was also shocked.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke of "indescribable pain".
The European Aviation Safety Agency imposed a temporary flight ban on the helicopter model in 2016 due to safety concerns.
The previous model was involved in several accidents.
