The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, defended his decision to appoint General Luis Rodríguez Bucio as Mexico's new undersecretary of security and ruled out that it is another step in the militarization of the country, as criticized by the opposition and some groups of human rights.
The appointment adds to the controversy over the deployment of thousands of national guard troops in the Mexico City subway.
