1,471 vehicles were stolen in Am Moshavat in 2022 - four cars per night on average • This is a 100% jump per year • The municipality will set up roadblocks at night in an attempt to stop the phenomenon • Residents protest: "Economic terrorism

The city of Petah Tikva is one of the cities in Israel that suffer from the phenomenon of vehicle theft drastically.

According to Israel Police data received by Israel Hayom.

During the year, which ended not long ago, an average of four vehicles were stolen every day in the city.

In 2022, 1,471 vehicles were stolen from the city.

This is a sharp increase compared to 2021, in which "only" 834 vehicles were stolen, every day 2.2 vehicles on average, almost twice as less.

Due to the severe scourge of thefts, Mayor Rami Greenberg decided on a comprehensive security plan, centered on the deployment of urban security barriers at exits from the city at night.

Greenberg instructed the security department in the municipality to place barriers manned by security patrols at exits from the city at night, with the aim of making it difficult for the car thieves to escape the city with the loot.

An unprecedented blow

"We are working in all sectors to increase police activity and respond to the phenomenon," Greenberg said.

"The security officials were instructed to advance approval with the police to place manned checkpoints at exits from the city during the night and all days of the week."

The municipality stated that this is a significant system, and that there is no doubt that it is expected to provide a solution at the area level.

"We will spare no resources and effort to give a sense of security to the residents of the city."

The residents of the city are hoping for a solution to the painful problem.

"During the last month alone, more than 30 vehicles, most of them Kia, Mazda and Hyundai models, were stolen from the Hadar Ganim neighborhood in the city," says public activist Yaron Kadoshim.

"Every morning the residents wake up to notices of night thefts that amount to up to six vehicles in one night. Every day between two and six vehicles are stolen."

Kadoshim says that this is a wave of thefts like no other.

"It is not possible for a resident to park a car at night and not know if it will be there in the morning. This is economic terrorism for all intents and purposes, heavy damage, and also a danger to life when squads of thieves roam parking lots in neighborhoods in the dead of night. Things have never happened before."
