In France, each public transport company has its own rules regarding traveling with a dog.
Are dogs allowed on public transport?
It is important to remember that all guide or assistance dogs are
authorized
to accompany their masters on all public transport, regardless of their size or breed.
When traveling, masters must carry one of these documents:
a disability card,
a priority card,
an educator card,
a "Host family"
card
the dog's identification certificate.

Denying access to public transport to a person accompanied by a guide or assistance dog is an offense punishable by a fine ranging from 150 to 450 euros.
In Paris, most public transport (bus, metro, RER or tram) is managed by the RATP.
It authorizes the access of pets (dog, cat and NAC) under certain conditions.
The same is true for other major cities in France such as Lyon and Marseille.
Everywhere in France, 1st and 2nd category dogs, such as the Rottweiler or the Mastiff, are
prohibited
on public transport.

In Paris, dogs are accepted by the RATP depending on their size and the mode of transport used.
To be accepted on the bus, funicular, metro, RER and Paris tramway, small dogs, such as dachshunds, pugs or even French bulldogs, must be locked in boxes, bags or transport baskets.
Since June 2016, large and medium-sized dogs, such as the Border collie, the Collie or the Great Dane, have been authorized to travel on the metro and the RER.
They must be kept on a leash and muzzled.
However, they are still excluded from the buses.
The TCL network in
Lyon
allows small dogs when they travel in properly closed transport boxes.
Dogs over 6 kg must be kept on a leash and muzzled.
About public transport in Marseille: dogs and pets are generally prohibited on all RTM networks.
However, it is possible to derogate from this prohibition.
Indeed, small dogs not listed in the official classification of dangerous animals are allowed if they are transported in closed boxes, bags or cages and installed on the lap of the person transporting them.
With regard to guide dogs for the blind or assistance, they must be equipped with a harness and a leash (more than 80 cm in length).
They are, however, exempt from wearing a muzzle.
When a guide dog is not equipped with a harness or a work vest, the guided or assisted person must be able to justify the presence of the dog.
In other cities in France, you must refer to the regulations put in place by the transport companies.

In Paris, since November 2019, the metro and RER have been free for all “big” and “small” dogs.
To access the TCL Lyon network with his dog, the master must pay for a "Waf" transport ticket and hold a certificate, including the dog's identification number and the name of the companion(s).

To travel on the Marseille RTM network, owners of small dogs must be in possession of a transport ticket worth €1.70 per journey for the metro and €2 per journey for the bus. .
Assistance, rescue and police dogs are allowed everywhere free of charge.
