At least 18 people were killed, including Ukraine's interior minister and three children, after a helicopter crashed near a kindergarten on the outskirts of kyiv on Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred in Brovary, a suburb located about 15 miles (24 kilometers) northeast of the capital, Ihor Klymenko, head of the Ukrainian National Police, said in a statement.

The cause of the accident, which comes as the country's war with Russia nears 11 months, was not immediately clear.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Denys Monastyrsky and other officials were among those killed in the crash, according to Klymenko.

Of those who died, at least 9 were on board the helicopter, Klymenko said.
