After abnormally mild temperatures, winter finally seems to be settling in the Southwest.
While it is rather rare in Bordeaux, the snow draped the city in white this Wednesday, January 18, to the delight of young and old.
In the Gironde capital, this had not happened since 2018. Several towns in the region were also affected by this phenomenon during the day.
At 3 p.m., La Chaîne Météo* explains on its website that “
the drop in temperatures begun by the Gironde favors the appearance of snowfall.
They are mixing for the moment with the rain, with temperatures of 0 to 1°C between Bordeaux and the Médoc region
”.
The thermostat has indeed dropped by more than ten degrees in Bordeaux since last week, dropping from 14 to just 2°C.
It is a phenomenon of snow by isothermal, the rain being transformed into snow under the effect of the air which cools in altitude.
In places, it even remains fixed to the ground, covering the port of the Moon with white.
Internet users have displayed their joy on social networks, posting photos and video showing snow falling in Gironde and in the Landes.
But this winter episode calls for vigilance on the road.
Snowfalls took place in particular on the A62 motorway between Bordeaux and Marmande.
It is recommended not to double the salting machines and to keep a safe distance.
“
Given the weather conditions
”, Bordeaux Métropole has also announced an exceptional closure of the recycling centers in the agglomeration, until Wednesday 6 p.m.

In the rest of New Aquitaine, “
continuous and moderate rains still affect the departments of Landes, Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Hautes-Pyrénées.
The hourly intensities are on average 2-3 mm per hour, with sometimes maximums of up to 5 mm
”, specifies La Chaîne Météo.
For the evening of this Wednesday, "
in the south of New Aquitaine, the rains become intermittent and of sometimes moderate intensity, before strengthening again tomorrow
".
At the end of the day, white still dresses several corners of the metropolis.
