In a video she posted on her TikTok page, flight attendant Sarah Goodwin stated that the best thing people who are afraid of flying can do is choose the seat closest to the front of the plane, because in this area you feel the air turbulence at its lowest intensity.

"If the seats at the beginning of the plane are occupied, book a seat near the wings, because these balance the plane," she said.

Goodwin recommended that those suffering from flight anxiety talk to the flight attendants and tell them about it, as it is one of their job descriptions.

"We have a lot of experience in calming people who are nervous or with flight anxiety. Don't feel uncomfortable talking to us, we really like to calm people down in such situations," she noted.

Goodwin also said that people with flight anxiety should avoid caffeinated beverages before flying, as it can increase their anxiety and make them more nervous.

She also recommended avoiding salty food or processed food, since at such altitudes the monkey has difficulty digesting them.

Another avoidance that Goodwin recommends is drinking alcohol and carbonated drinks, and also avoiding eating dried fruits and beans.

But what should you do while flying?

Well, the flight attendant recommends eating unsalted nuts, fruits and umami-flavored snacks, because the taste is linked to a phenomenon that affects the taste buds during the flight.

"The dryness in the airplane cabin reduces the sensitivity of the taste buds by about 30%," she said.

"Therefore, flight foods are sweeter or saltier than similar foods that are served on the ground, but the umami taste is not affected, so you feel it well during the flight," she explained.

Goodwin's final piece of advice for people with flight anxiety is to focus on something that can distract them from what's happening on the plane.

"It can be reading a book, listening to music or even looking up words on the computer, do whatever will occupy you. Distraction can work wonders in calming nausea and nerves," she concluded.
