The armed bunker that was exposed is in the house about 300 meters away from the first hiding place of the mafia leader in the city of Campobello di Mezzara in Sicily, according to a report by the BBC network.
Messina Denaro was arrested on Tuesday at a private clinic in the Sicilian capital Palermo, where he underwent cancer treatments under the pseudonym Andrea Bonfidi.
The police tried to capture him for 30 years, but he managed to elude the authorities - until this week.
The fake name aroused the suspicion of the police when they realized that it was the name of the brother of the mafia boss Leonardo Bonfidi, who passed away.
