David Crosby, legendary singer-songwriter, dies at 81

David Crosby, a pioneer of folk and rock music and one of the founding members of the Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash, has died at age 81, his family announced Thursday.

"It is with great sadness, after a long illness, that our beloved David (Croz) Crosby passed away. He was surrounded by his wife and soul mate Jan and his son Django. Although he is no longer here with us, his humanity and the kindness of his soul will continue to guide and inspire us. His legacy will live on through his legendary music. Peace, love and harmony to all who knew David and those whom he touched. He will be greatly missed. At this time, we respectfully and kindly ask for privacy while We are grieving and trying to deal with our profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers," the Crosby family wrote in a news release.

Crosby's representatives had no comment when contacted by CNN.
