Today, many French cities witnessed mass strikes and demonstrations at the call of the trade unions, rejecting the pension reform project presented by President Emmanuel Macron, which requires raising the retirement age to 64 years by 2030 and accelerating the process of raising the minimum number of years of contribution to the pension insurance fund.
And Agence France-Presse quoted the head of the General Confederation of Labor as saying: “The rate of participation in the strike amounted to between 70 and 100 percent among the workers of the refineries, while the teachers of the preparatory education sector went on strike.”
The Civil Aviation Authority asked airlines to cancel five flights from Paris airport due to the strike of air traffic controllers, and in the railways, the national company (SNCF) expected major disturbances, with a third of the express trains running.
For his part, Laurent Bergé, head of the French Democratic Confederation of Labor, said: “We need many people to join the protests to show that the people are against this reform,” stressing that today “is only the beginning.”
On the other hand, the authorities took extensive security measures, as they deployed more than 10,000 police officers, including 3,500 in the capital, Paris, to ensure security.
Over the past years, France has witnessed major protests, rejecting the economic policies pursued by President Macron's government.
