Opinion You won, don't run over: if the government does "just" - it will come at our expense Israel today

2023-01-19T20:59:13.470Z

The state is like a large aircraft carrier, and until it manages to move - the political reality changes • The question is not who started the process, but what is good for Israel

In her first week in office, Minister Miri Regev stated that she would not advance the metro plan in the center "until there are proper transportation solutions for the periphery."

Immediately after, the government did exactly the opposite - passed a "law of continuity" on the metro law, and in fact will advance it from the point where its predecessor left off.

A similar decision should also be made regarding the climate law that is on the table.

These two laws are examples of great and good moves that are not controversial and that can be promoted quickly.

The new government, which immediately canceled moves in the public interest - such as taxation on disposable dishes and sugary drinks - needs to understand that if it does "just" to the previous government, it will come at our expense.

It is better for her to complete the moves and then, as is customary in politics, claim that it is all due to her.

One such move, which is in positive momentum and should receive a push in the right direction, is the development of Haifa Bay and the evacuation of the petrochemical plants.

Last May, a government decision was passed and an administration was established to implement the plan.

The planning is progressing at a surprising pace, and in a meeting held in the Prime Minister's office a few days before the change of government, it was estimated that if the schedules continue to show such progress - the factories will be evacuated from the Gulf as early as 2028.

Surprising progress on the way to evacuation.

to advance what has already been decided upon

The Negev development vision also crosses political parties and camps.

In the outgoing government, we passed resolutions to promote the Negev, including the "Decision for the Development of the Eastern Negev" which was intended to improve the quality of life of the residents and reduce the gaps in services for citizens.

The decision budgeted approximately NIS 430 million for a variety of aid tools in the areas of housing, infrastructure, tourism, economy and employment, health and welfare.

In addition to this, we passed resolutions on the establishment of 14 new settlements in the Negev, as well as on the establishment of three Bedouin settlements and the advancement of their regularization process, the goal of which is to gather the Bedouin diaspora into regulated settlements, and to provide them with decent living conditions and basic infrastructure.

The implementation of the decision will free up a lot of land for the development of the Negev.

In June 2022, the government, with the support of the opposition, passed the law on welfare services for people with disabilities, which defined their rights for the first time, and above all - restored their trust, that of their families and of the organizations in the country.

The implementation of the law is entirely in the hands of the incoming government, and those who benefit from it have no political color - they have a real need and maybe even dependence on it.

Will she be able to continue promoting this life-changing move?

These are just selected examples out of dozens, including the reform to decentralize powers in local government, the continuation of the work of the inter-ministerial team to eradicate violence in Arab society, the implementation of the import reform or the implementation of the government's decision to diversify and train human capital for high-tech.

It is difficult to decide what is more or less important, but the decisions are not controversial and it is appropriate to continue them, and quickly.

The country is a large aircraft carrier.

In many cases, until it manages to move in a certain direction, the political reality changes.

I hope that with the good and right things, which are not controversial, the new government will know how to let this aircraft carrier move forward in the direction in which it has already headed.

The big question is not who started the process or who gets the credit, but what is good for Israeli society.
