Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi described the European Union's move to include the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in the list of terrorist organizations as a measure of helplessness, in violation of international laws and the Charter of the United Nations.
“This step came out of desperation, and after the failure of their failed attempts in the street to strike the Iranian people so that they could obstruct their progressive march,” Raisi was quoted as saying by the Iranian news agency IRNA at an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers held today.
Raisi stressed that the Revolutionary Guard is "an official force and part of the country's military system."
Yesterday, MEPs voted in favor of the proposed amendment to include the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on the European Union's list of terrorist groups.
In turn, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian strongly criticized the “tense and emotional approach of the European Parliament,” and considered it ill-conceived and wrong behavior.
During a phone call with the High Representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union, Josep Borrell, Abdollahian said that this project is “passive, sharp and unprofessional by the European Parliament and contradicts rationality and civilization,” stressing that the Revolutionary Guards “are an official and sovereign institution that plays an important and vital role in providing Iran’s national security.” And the security of the region, especially in the fight against terrorism.
The Foreign Minister warned the European Parliament that it should think about the negative consequences of this emotional behavior on Europe, and focus on the path of diplomacy, constructive interaction and rationality.
