Two Palestinians, including an Islamic Jihad fighter, were killed on Thursday (January 19th) in a night raid by the Israeli army in the city of Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank, according to a statement from the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

The two dead are Jawad Farid Bawaqna (57), "

killed by a bullet in the chest

", and Adham Mohammed Bassem Jabarine (28), hit by a bullet "

in the upper abdomen

", writes the ministry .

Israeli army statement

The Israeli army said in a statement that it opened fire on '

armed Palestinians

' who fired at soldiers and threw explosive devices during a '

counter-terror operation

' in Jenin, West Bank, Palestinian Territory occupied by Israel since 1967.

People were "

affected

", continues the army, adding that a soldier was "

slightly injured during the operation and evacuated to a hospital

17 Palestinians killed so far this year

Since a wave of anti-Israeli attacks in March and April 2022, the Israeli army has stepped up operations in the West Bank, particularly in the areas of Jenin and Nablus (north), strongholds of armed Palestinian factions.

Adham Mohammed Bassem Jabarine was a member of the Islamic Jihad, according to the Palestinian armed group.

These new deaths bring to 17 the number of Palestinians, civilians or members of armed groups, killed since the beginning of the year in violence with Israeli forces or civilians in the West Bank.
