The Russian ambassador in Washington accuses the US of pressuring Ukraine to carry out "terrorist attacks" - and threatens to respond.

WASHINGTON DC - The Russian ambassador to the US has commented on the use of US weapons in the Ukraine war.

In addition to the war rhetoric familiar from Russia, Antonov directed new allegations at Washington – and threatened clear countermeasures.

Vladimir Putin's US diplomat was responding to a US State Department comment on the use of American weapons in Crimea.

On Wednesday (January 18), US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken's spokesman, Ned Price, responded to a press conference on whether Ukraine could use US weapons to attack Crimea.

“We are providing Ukraine with the weapons it needs to defend its territory,” Price replied, adding, “Crimea is Ukraine.” Apparently, the Kremlin didn't take this remark very well.

Ukraine war: Russia's ambassador threatens US response to arms deliveries

Such statements would "essentially urge the regime in Kyiv to carry out terrorist attacks in Russia," Antonov replied on Thursday.

This increases the risk of conflict escalation.

The ambassador left open whether he was also referring to a conflict between Russia and the USA.

However, he was apparently addressing NATO directly when he commented on alleged reports that US Himars missile launchers and Bradley main battle tanks would be used in a Ukrainian attack on Crimea.

"Commentators naively believe that Russia will not respond to attacks on its territory," he said.

In addition, the statement was peppered with rhetoric that has been heard regularly from Russia since the beginning of the Ukraine war.

Antonov spoke of overthrowing the "neo-Nazi regime" in Ukraine, ending by saying, "It's just impossible to defeat the Russian Federation.

The victory will be ours."

Rhetoric in the Ukraine war: Russia threatens the USA

The language was in stark contrast to the words that provoked Antonov's outburst.

"We have neither encouraged nor enabled our Ukrainian partners to strike beyond their borders," Price said.

"Everything we provide to Ukraine is for a single purpose, which is the country's self-defense."

Threats to the West are also regularly heard from the Russian media.

Just recently, Russia's state TV threatened the United States with nuclear annihilation.
