With their insight and passion for handicrafts, a group of blind young women in Homs have mastered the art of making macrame (weaving and knitting threads), bags and distinctive pieces of art in various sizes and colors. They underwent a training course last month at the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired in the city's Al-Mahatta neighborhood.

The training that the young women received gave rise to their desire to invest the skills they acquired in establishing a small joint project to produce various types of arts and handicrafts, in a way that secures them financial income on the one hand and fills their time with fun and benefit on the other hand, and it is currently under study, according to their interview with SANA reporter.

The young woman, Dima Al-Khalil, who holds a university degree in history from Al-Baath University, found a favorable opportunity to acquire the skills of this art through the aforementioned training course, especially since she has a great passion for handicrafts and knitting. She added: “I had previously seen macrame art pieces before I completely lost my sight About two years ago, I completed macrames and wall paintings at the end of the training course that we underwent.”

Her sister Mai Al-Khalil, who holds a university degree in Arabic literature, agrees with her opinion, and suffers from visual impairment that gradually increases with age, as the course is a good opportunity to fill her time with handicrafts that contain creativity, fun, and innovation. distinguished.

As for the young woman, Gram Salloum, who holds a university degree in education and is currently pursuing her master’s study, and she lost her sight as a result of a medical error when she was young, and the operations that were performed on her did not succeed in restoring her sight, she says: “I adore art because it expresses the self, and during the session we exchanged ideas and shared to produce distinctive works It was well received and accepted by everyone who saw it.

While the young Lina Al-Abrash (fourth year Arabic Literature) points out that her vision in one of her eyes is only two degrees helped her complete her academic career and develop her hobby in the art of making macrames and bags, considering that the arts are a wide field for creating pieces that often receive the attention of various segments of society and constitute a job opportunity that enhances the living conditions of girls And ladies in general.

Young Ghanima Al-Najjar says: “I used to see until the age of six, and because of retinitis, my vision gradually began to decrease until I saw less than a degree, but this degree enables me to rely on myself, and I work with my sisters at home with handicrafts such as knitting wool with hooks, stitching, embroidery, and others. Today, I learned the art of making macrames and bags with the association’s young women, and it was an enjoyable and useful experience.”

The young woman, Laila Al-Shaar, also believes that her mastery of arts and handicrafts is an opportunity to improve her financial income and rely on herself like the rest of her companions in the association, as her sisters support her at home by choosing colors to make distinctive pieces, in addition to her studies in psychology (currently fourth year), as she lost her sight at the age of fifteen She continues her normal life, armed with patience and will, according to her expression.

The association’s administrative affairs official, Hala Al-Yafi, indicated that the aim of the training course was to enhance social communication among young women in the association and enable them to acquire this type of handicraft. Well received by the visitors.
