The tech sector continues to be hit by heavy waves of layoffs.
While more than 150,000 jobs were already cut last year in the United States, it's Google's turn to announce a drastic cut in its workforce.
The Californian giant revealed on Friday that it was going to make 12,000 layoffs worldwide.
The American employees affected were informed immediately.
“
Over the past two years, we have experienced periods of spectacular growth.
To support and fuel this growth, we have hired a lot.
But this economic reality was different from the one we know today
”, justifies the general manager Sundar Pichai in an email sent to the whole group.
Alphabet had nearly 187,000 employees worldwide at the end of September 2022. The cuts therefore represent just over 6% of its workforce.
Other waves of layoffs at Microsoft and Amazon
Google is due to report its 2022 financial results on February 2.
Like the entire tech sector, the group is affected by a deteriorating economic context which is pushing its professional customers to be cautious about their spending on advertising and cloud services.
The announcements follow those of Microsoft, which announced 10,000 layoffs on Tuesday.
On the same day, Amazon notified several thousand employees who will lose their jobs.
In total, the e-commerce giant has cut more than 18,000 jobs since November.
"
Tech stalwarts have been hiring at a rate that was unsustainable and the deteriorating macro environment is now forcing them to lay off
," commented Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities.
“
Midnight struck for hypergrowth as tech companies spent money like rock stars in the 1980s
,” the analyst continued.
