A strong earthquake was felt by residents of Guadeloupe at 7:23 a.m. local time on Friday, January 20, but it did not cause any damage, according to firefighters.
This earthquake, whose epicenter was located at sea more than 160 kilometers deep and 52 kilometers west of Pointe-à-Pitre, was of magnitude 5.9 according to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Guadeloupe. (OVSG), 6.1 according to the University of the West Indies (UWI) Seismological Research Center, and 6.2 according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).
No major damage
An hour later, the Guadeloupe firefighters indicated that there was no “
ongoing intervention related to this event
”.
The Minister of the Interior and Overseas Gérald Darmanin for his part assured on social networks that there was no "
risk of tsunami
" and that "
no major damage (was) identified
" at this stage.
Guadeloupe is in a very active seismic zone and regularly undergoes slight earthquakes, more or less felt by the inhabitants.
