What is true gratitude?

In the book of Exodus, chapter 7, it is written: "And Jehovah said to Moses, say to Aaron, take your staff and put your hand over the waters of Egypt - and there will be blood."

The above verse raises an interesting question that contains an important message for every person - why did God want Aaron to strike Beor instead of Moses and turn him to blood? So far all the tasks have been performed by Moses. Why this time is God asking Moses not to carry out the task and not to strike Beor himself, Except that his brother Aharon will do it in his place and beat Beor and turn him into blood? Why? What changed?

The answer is: because of gratitude.

What gratitude was there in this case?

When Pharaoh issued a decree to kill every male baby born in the nation of Israel, the baby Moses was smuggled in an ark on the mountain.

The waters of the Hayar swept little Moshe away from danger.

G-d asked Aaron to kill Yore instead of Moshe, because Moshe had to show favor to Yore who saved him when he was a baby.

HaYor carried Moshe on him and carried him away from danger, so how now will Moshe deal with HaYor with good spoons and beat him and turn his water into blood?

Does the silent Lior have feelings?

Another question arises from this:

Moshe Rabbnu wonders - if I hit Beor, will Beor be offended by it?

After all, the light is still and does not feel.

He experienced no physical pain, no mental or emotional pain.

To this God answers Moshe:

I do not care for the light or its water, but I care for you, Moshe, that you do not corrupt your morals.

Because if you know how to recognize a favor for an inanimate thing, then all the more you will know how to recognize a favor for a flesh and blood person who did you a favor.

You will know more how to appreciate the people around you and the good they will do and give you.

Make the bed, fold the clothes

What can we learn from this for our lives?

We must show kindness even to inanimate things that do us a favor, and return the favor and not look down on them.

Did you sleep on the bed all night?

Did the bed serve you all night?

Do her a favor by making the sheets when you get up in the morning, and don't leave her messy.

Have you used clothes all day?

Did they serve you?

Did they warm you up?

Fold them nicely and put them in the closet, don't throw them around the room.

Does your car serve you?

Do you use it to get anywhere?

Clean it and wash it.

When we know how to appreciate even inanimate things and acknowledge them as a favor, then we will be able to enhance the degree of gratitude we have built to the highest level possible, and we will become better people for ourselves and for others.

Shabbat Shalom.
