Writer David Grossman spoke at a demonstration against the government in Tel Aviv, against the backdrop of the legal revolution promoted by Justice Minister Levin. "For many, Israel has ceased to be a home. Among them are people of the left, and also people of the right - even their jubilation of victory fails to hide a thin seepage of panic, when they see the cost"

Writer David Grossman spoke this evening (Saturday) at a demonstration held in Tel Aviv against the Netanyahu government, against the background of the legal revolution promoted by Justice Minister Yariv Levin.

"More and more I meet people, mainly young people, who do not want to continue living here. What is happening here is foreign to them, and makes them unwillingly strangers in their own country," Grossman said in front of over 100,000 protesters who were present there.

"Israel, as it is today, has ceased to be a home for them, and in order not to suffer from the feeling of foreignness, they put themselves in a kind of 'internal exile.' The Jew will feel at home. If so many Israelis feel like 'exiles in their own country', it is clear that something is going wrong.

I think a lot of people feel that way.

People of the center, people of the left and people of the right.

Jews and Arabs, those who were defeated in the elections and even those who won.

Those whose jubilation of victory fails to hide a thin seepage of panic, when they see the true cost of their victory.

And above all, when they begin to see the faces of the partners in their victory.

In its 75th year, Israel is in a fateful struggle for its image, for the face of its democracy, for the status of the rule of law, for human rights, for the freedom of creativity and art, for free public broadcasting.

Our struggle is a struggle against laws designed to institutionalize racism and discrimination, to humiliate minorities.

A fight against cynical politicians, some of them corrupt, who are determined to redefine justice in a unilateral, anti-democratic way.

Friends, I know, it's not easy to leave the house and demonstrate week after week and then get stuck in traffic, sometimes for hours.

But we are doing and doing here an act of great awakening.

of the beginning of the return from exile - mainly the internal, paralyzing one - to the home.

There are here, in this huge and diverse crowd, those whose rights, the state of education, and the state of the occupation, burn in their hearts and keep sleep from their eyes - like me. There are representatives of many bodies here on the streets who are not involved in the protest at all on a daily basis. There are also here, as in the previous demonstrations, Die-hard right-wingers, all of them, are ready today to suspend their agenda for a while in order to unite around the most important, critical and urgent thing of all.

"It's time to stand up and shout: this land is in our soul"

And we do this, because behind the unilateral and predatory program of the 'legal reform', we see a house on fire.

We also understand that if the status of the rule of law is humanly harmed, all other important struggles will gradually fade as well.

And because of all these things, I refuse to be an exile in my country - and I think you are too, otherwise we wouldn't be here.

Demonstrators, refuse to be passive, refuse to be indifferent, refuse to be exiles in our country.

Now is the time, friends, the black time.

Now is the time to stand up and shout: this land is in our soul.

What happens here today will determine who we will be, who we and our child will be.

Because if Israel is so far from those who created it, it is in a certain sense but horrifying - it won't be."
