The political crisis in Peru unleashed after the removal of former President Pedro Castillo on December 7 has the country plunged into a wave of protests. This Saturday the police intervene in an educational center in the capital and access to Machu Picchu is closed due to the riots. Follow the latest here.

More than 50 people have died during the protests, according to the Ombudsman's Office

More than a dozen people died in Juliaca on January 9.

According to the most recent balance of the Ombudsman's Office, 54 people have died and 772 people have been injured since the start of the protests on December 7, 2022.

Of the people killed, 44 civilians died during clashes between protesters and police, 9 civilians died due to traffic accidents and events related to road blockades, and 1 police officer died due to acts of violence, the entity said.

The Ombudsman's Office also pointed out that the mobilizations and road blockades this Friday are registered in 47 provinces of the country, which is equivalent to 24% of the national territory.
