A country in a state of emergency: Thousands of people again demonstrated against the government in large parts of Peru on Friday.

At least 50 people have died in the violent street battles so far.

In the capital Lima, the police used tear gas and demonstrators threw bottles and stones.

In the center of Lima, a historic building burned down to the ground.

Leonardo Rojas, resident of Lima: »It's a national chaos, you can't live like that.

We are in a terrible state of uncertainty.

The economy is suffering, vandalism is rampant.

«

Alvaro, Resident: “Congress and the President are wrong.

They do nothing about what is happening.”

The rural parts of the country are also affected by the protests, and the government has declared a state of emergency for several regions.

Roads are blocked and airports closed.

In Ollantaytambo, not far from the world-famous Inca ruins of Machu Picchu, there were clashes between demonstrators and the riot police.

Carlos Olivera, protester: “No tourists come with these problems in our country.

So that's also a disadvantage for us.

But right now there is no other option but to protest.«

The protests have been going on since early December.

The trigger was the impeachment and arrest of left-leaning ex-president Pedro Castillo.

The accusation: Castillo wanted to dissolve parliament in order to avoid impeachment proceedings.

The demonstrators are now demanding the resignation of the new President Dina Boluarte, the release of Castillo and new elections.

Further large-scale demonstrations have been announced for the next few days.
