Running newsletter »SPIEGEL is running«: On your marks, get set, go!

2023-01-21T10:49:12.256Z

From now on there is the best of the SPIEGEL universe for runners in the newsletter: We talk about personal experiences, tips for perseverance and getting faster. Injuries are also an issue – unfortunately.

And some even write about this sport, conduct interviews with professionals or deal with scientific aspects.

We bundle this knowledge and our personal experiences in a newsletter that will be published regularly from now on.

Today it starts!

Do you run too?

For a little more health in everyday life or rather performance-oriented?

Then this newsletter should contain interesting details for you.

It appears every two weeks and should always be written by other runners from the company.

My name is Jan Göbel and I work in the sports department of SPIEGEL.

I couldn't have picked a better time for the first issue.

On Monday I got a love letter from radiology: My medial meniscus has torn.

Unfortunately, the cartilage in the knee doesn't look so great anymore either, and that's probably the bigger problem in the long run.

Apparently I've been carrying the injury around with me for a long time.

There was not

one

accident that triggered it, not a moment that was associated with great pain.

But in October I thought for the first time while running: there is something!

In any case, since then I've been trying to stabilize my knee and leg with strengthening exercises.

I stretch more

There are many days when I don't feel anything from my knee problems.

But sometimes it feels weird, and that was the reason for going to the doctor.

Now I was in the MRI and have a finding.

The great art of running is to outwit yourself from time to time in order to get a few meters further.

Only up to the next traffic light, then you can eat one more biscuit!

So I remain positive and take the injury as an opportunity to talk to you.

I'm interested to know whether you, as a runner, have ever been stopped by knee damage and how you decided: conservative therapy or surgery?

Was it the right decision for you?

Everything went well - could you walk like before?

Have you switched sports?

Please write to me: jan.goebel@spiegel.de .

My first big run this year was supposed to be the half marathon in Berlin, my training plan would start at the beginning of next week, the start of the race in April.

I was full of anticipation, I was there last year too, and it was a nice experience after the many cancellations during the Corona peak phase.

well!

It could be difficult with the knee this year.

But at least I can still cheer for others.

Have you also set a goal for 2023?

Or maybe you just started running in the first place?

In an interview with marathon professional Katharina Steinruck, we discussed what beginners should pay attention to.

Why the heart rate is important for training control, how you can outwit your weaker self and what kind of training is required in addition to running.

Here's how to stick with it.

Strengthen, stretch, stay injury-free

If I had conducted this interview a little earlier, I would have invested a lot more time in strengthening and stabilization exercises - I was rather careless about it.

Runner Steinruck says: »Often we only start to strengthen our muscles when they are already causing too many problems, and then run after our problems.

Such exercises do not take up much time and can be integrated into a short warm-up program or carried out after the run.«

There are numerous videos on the Internet with useful exercises for a good warm-up and balancing program.

I like these seven exercises.

But if something really hurts, you should see a doctor.

I would like to give you a reading recommendation for the weekend.

My colleague Hilmar Schmundt tried it out on himself at the Boston marathon last year.

He asked himself: Can I run faster with high tech in my arms?

Hilmar monitored his muscle sugar concentration with a sensor in his upper arm.

Was the result better in the end?

Here is the test report.

Are you on Instagram?

Then, at the end of this first issue, I'll tell you my favorite running account.

It's called "RunRx" and is operated by a running expert from the USA.

The main thing here is how we can run pain-free, how we can improve our running style and thus prevent injuries.

There are lots of little exercises to do here.

I wish you a good run.

Your Jan Goebel
