"An intolerable situation": the address of the head of the council in the Negev, Laban Gabir Israel today

2023-01-22T18:25:43.468Z

Eran Doron sent a scathing letter to Laban Gvir after the latter promised upon taking office that he would deal with crime in the Negev • Among the requests written: the budgeting of Rabbis for settlements near the fence, the establishment of a "Roa" center and the physical presence of police officers and inspectors

"Insecurity at the most basic level":

The head of the Ramat HaNegev Regional Council, Eran Doron, today (Sunday) sent an urgent letter to the Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gabir, demanding the immediate execution of a number of actions even before the state budget is passed.

The council points out that although millions of shekels have been invested in measures such as cameras, fences and gates and proactive actions to increase security, the residents face daily crime due to the wide geographical distribution of the council and the small number of forces on the ground.

As I recall, one of the minister's first decisions was to establish an office in Beer Sheva.

"I will stop the lawlessness in the area," declared Ben Gvir at the time.

"This is an unbearable situation of insecurity at the most basic level," wrote Doron Laban Gabir.

"In such a situation, the law-abiding public that is here in practice out of Zionism and love for the Negev, may take the law into their own hands for the safety of their family and community. Doron adds that "it is important to note that during the period when the temporary barriers were operating, there was a significant decrease in crime in the area."

Recruiting volunteers for the MGB

The steps that Doron demands to be taken: the inclusion of the Negev Plateau in the council policing system.

The meaning: the physical presence of police officers and council inspectors over the vast areas that the council has.

According to this decision, it will be possible to assemble a dedicated police force consisting of police officers and inspectors in accordance with the council's enforcement system.

In addition to this, the establishment of a "watcher" center: the establishment of a command and control system by a staffed center with cameras that will enable a real-time response to crime attempts in the area.

Also, the budgeting of Rabbis in the hinterland settlements.

According to the head of the council, just as the Ministry of Defense budgets riot police for settlements near the fence, it is necessary to budget riot police for the hinterland settlements that regularly suffer from crime.

Another step is to shorten the process of recruiting volunteers for the MGB: since the process of recruiting and training the thousands of police officers required to strengthen the Israel Police is a long and complex process, there is a quick ability to activate hundreds of caring citizens, graduates of combat units who are interested in contributing to their personal security and to the communities.

Among other things, he noted that there are hundreds of greenhouses for illegal cannabis crops, agricultural crime, road bullying and more.
