Penzberg bus station too small - but changing to the other side of the tracks would have many disadvantages

The Penzberg bus station should not be moved to the other side of the tracks. The Penzberg bus station should not be moved to the other side of the tracks.

Although there would be more space for the necessary expansion, the building committee spoke out against a change of sides.

Another option is that the bus station expands to an urban area between the platform and the former post office.

Penzberg – The Penzberg bus station currently has four bus platforms for vehicles twelve meters long, as well as another bus stop and a waiting lane on the long side of the station.

This is too little.

More space is needed to be able to accommodate 15-meter national buses in the future and, above all, more buses, such as the Alpenbus, when it comes.

There will be a foretaste of how crowded the current bus station will be from the end of March, when buses will be used to replace the rails due to the closed railway line.

RVO: Seven construction departure points and three waiting areas are required for the future

According to RVO branch manager Ralf Kreutzer, a future bus station in Penzberg will require seven bus departure points and three additional areas for breaks.

Penzberg's building committee therefore briefly discussed the idea of moving the bus station to the other side of the train tracks last December, where the "Park & Ride" site is currently located.

He instructed the city administration to look into this.

The result was now available this week: A change to the west side has more disadvantages than advantages.

Location on the west side would be "a dream" - but only in terms of space

RVO boss Kreutzer said at the meeting that the west side would be "a dream" in terms of space.

He sees advantages, especially for regional bus services.

Harald Spath from the traffic planning office "Gevas" presented a sketch.

Generously dimensioned, an area 90 meters long and 30 meters wide would be necessary.

90 meters would be almost the entire long side of the "Park & Ride" area.

According to the RVO boss, a major disadvantage of a bus station on the west side is that the city buses on lines 1A and 1B have to cross the level crossing every time, and often exactly when a train is coming.

The timetable would get out of step if the buses are often in front of closed barriers.

In order to absorb this, a bus and a driver would also be needed, said Kreutzer.

He also warned that passengers who want to go to the center or come from the center would also have to cross the level crossing.

Transport planner Spath said that a solution for pedestrians would therefore be needed - for example a second platform so that passengers can also get off the train on the other side.

An idea that is currently not realistic.

Mayor Stefan Korpan (CSU) also pointed out that

that opportunities for other projects would be blocked on the west side.

Armin Jabs (BfP) also warned of "exorbitant costs".

Building committee rejects change of sides proposal

Against this background, the committee filed the change of sides proposal.

Even if a bus station on the west side would have had charm, as Hardi Lenk (SPD) said, since the view of the station would have been freed from the bus optics.

The bus station remains on the east side.

He still needs more space.

The building committee commissioned the administration to examine variants.

As reported, one of them is to extend the existing bus platforms by three meters to make room for 15-meter buses.

For this, Philippstraße would have to become a one-way street in this area.

Option for expansion: municipal property on Philippstrasse

But even that would not be enough, according to traffic planner Spath.

Another possibility, as proposed by the BfP, is to use the municipal property between the railway tracks and the former post office building for the bus station - as an additional area for expansion.

However, the building at Philippstrasse 30 would have to go.

This additional option should at least not be ruled out for the architects' competition now starting, which deals with the area around the train station, unlike a bus station on the west side.
