Against the background of the possibility that the European Union will impose sanctions on the Revolutionary Guards, the real rate fell to 447 thousand to the dollar. In total, the local currency has lost about 30% of its value since the outbreak of the hijab protests in September

Iran's official currency fell yesterday (Saturday) to a historic low against the US dollar, against the backdrop of Tehran's increasing isolation and the possibility that the European Union will impose sanctions on the Revolutionary Guards.

According to the website Bonbast, which tracks exchange rates, one dollar was sold for 447,000 riyals in the unofficial market, compared to 430,500 the previous day.

The Real has lost 29% of its value since the outbreak of the protest wave in mid-September following the death of the young Kurdish girl Mehsa Amini in the custody of the Moral Police.

The Governor of the Central Bank of Iran, Mohammad Reza Parzin, attributed the fall of the Rial to "psychological operations" that Tehran claims are being organized by its enemies to undermine the stability of the Islamic Republic.

Due to the high inflation rate, close to 50%, Iranians looking for a safe haven for their savings try to buy dollars, other currencies or gold.

Relations between the European Union and Tehran have deteriorated in recent months due to the impasse in the nuclear talks.

Iran even arrested several European citizens, and executed former Deputy Defense Minister Mohammad Reza Akbari, who also held British citizenship.

European countries imposed sanctions on senior officials and bodies responsible for suppressing the protesters, hundreds of whom were killed, and tomorrow they are expected to announce new sanctions.

Some countries want to go further and impose sanctions on the Revolutionary Guards, following the recommendation of the European Parliament.

Tehran has warned in recent days that the move will lead to a vulnerability in regional and global security, and amounts to "shooting itself in the foot" for Europe.
