A new musical experience added to the Syrian experiences relied on “singing, dancing and acting”, and it carried with it many social messages, and it mixed the “East and West” cultures in terms of music, to create the “Musical” model, which is the result of cooperation between a group of young people, some of whom are almost standing. For the first time on the stage of the Opera Theater in Damascus, students and graduates of the Higher Institutes of Music and Dramatic Arts presented an artistic painting entitled “A Story from the East.”
The “Musical” model is the third story presented on the stage of Syrian theatres. The first story was titled “Safar Al-Narjis”, and the second “The Last Story” was presented before the years of the war on Syria under the signature of Maestro Raad Khalaf, while the third story was titled “A Story from the East For these three experiences to be “Syrian par excellence”, through an integrated work team that presented a musical theater made of a homogeneity of artistic elements, each of which includes “heroes of the scene”, and the heroism in it becomes a “collective”.
This type of theatrical performance presents a new artistic image of the Syrian theater. A simplified drama that attracted the audience receiving it to a world of joy, to become a space of hope in the dark corridors of life, through the show’s message represented by the phrase “The origin of joy is a human being,” according to the Syrian critic and media figure Saad Al-Qassem to SANA.
Al-Qasim explained that “musical” is linguistically a designation for a variety show, and it has a dramatic and showy character. It is known as the musical comedy, and is attributed to the name of its composer.
Al-Qasim pointed out that later the name comedy was dropped from it, due to its association with pure theatre, so that the name “musicale” became inclusive of this show, which is not necessarily comical, laughing, indicating that the musical is one of the technically wide dramatic angles in the musical theater series, and one of the most important visual developments derived from the world of opera.
With regard to the dramatic aspect, Al-Qasim explained that the music depends on the story and the simplified and narrative dramatic plot, and all of this is based on the musical world that makes it up. The presentation environment also plays the main role in the complete formation of the musical world from scenography, which relies on chromatic dazzling in all its angles and then the three-dimensional spaces. In terms of decoration, the use of smart lighting and wide light projections to achieve color amazement and musical enjoyment in the first place.
He pointed out that the experience of acting in “musical” is one of the most difficult technical specializations, because the actor must professionalize (acting, singing and dancing) in its ideal form in performance, explaining that the world of music depends mainly on the nature of the human voices closest to it, provided that this or that voice has a vocal character. A certain desire that the composer desires, with the aim of making his music and songs, so that these voices and through the works of the musicians become famous later within the singing scene.
All the technical, logistical and creative details from which the “Musical” was formed came through advanced Syrian experiences, mixing western and eastern cultures with a youthful spirit, through Syrian cadres possessing academic and professional expertise in all show disciplines, from dancing, singing, acting, lighting techniques, sound, decoration and many others. Professionalism and the signature of Maestro Khalaf, which Al-Qasim described as a unique creative case in the cultural scene, and this is due, as Al-Qasim explained, to the fact that Maestro Khalaf comes from an artistic family saturated with musical tones, and is originally interested in oriental music and its references, as he is an expert in Eastern European music and a follower of artistic generations permanently new.
