At least nine people died on Saturday night in a shooting
that occurred outside a Chinese New Year celebration, in a city near Los Angeles, in the United States, according to authorities and North American media.
The Monterey Park shooting occurred after
a Lunar New Year celebration
that drew thousands of people, police said.
It took place in a business
and the shooter is a man, Los Angeles County Police Sgt. Bob Boese said today, CNN reported.
Monterey Park is a city of about 60,000 people with a large Asian population that is located about 10 miles from downtown Los Angeles.
The owner of a restaurant across the street from the shooting told the Los Angeles Times that
three people ran into his restaurant and asked him to close the doors.
The man, Seung Won Choi, added that people told him
there was a man with a machine gun,
and he said they believed the shooting took place at a nightclub around 10 p.m.
A two-day festival that is one of the biggest Lunar New Year events in Southern California kicked off in and around Los Angeles on Saturday.
