Removing a public holiday is not easy in Denmark.
But the Social Democratic Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, did not believe that her proposal, launched on December 14, would raise so many protests in Parliament, in the trade unions, the ecclesiastical world and public opinion.
In her New Year's speech, she had again defended this project to abolish "store bededag" ("great day of prayer"), the fourth Friday after Easter, decreed by King Christian V, in 1686. She had justified this measured by an increase in military spending, "
a necessity and a priority
" after the Russian invasion of Ukraine for the new coalition (Social Democrats, Liberals and centrist Party of Moderates) that she has been leading since mid-December.
