Officials in Berlin and Paris justify the reservations with "technical and procedural difficulties" • Behind the scenes: the two fear of an escalation in the conflict with Iran

The foreign ministers of the European Union will discuss today (Monday) the inclusion of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in the European terrorist list, due to this organization's part in suppressing popular demonstrations against the Iranian regime.

Last week, the European Parliament adopted by an absolute majority a call to the Council of the European Union to add the Revolutionary Guards to the terrorist list.

However, the two leading members of the European Union - Germany and France - pile up difficulties on making this decision for fear that it will cause the final burial of the efforts to revive the nuclear agreement with Iran and will bring Iran to officially announce its withdrawal from the agreement.

Will they be included in the list of terrorist organizations?

Negotiations on the renewal of the nuclear agreement have been frozen in recent months by the West due to Iran's military aid to Russia in its war against Ukraine and the brutal suppression of popular demonstrations against the regime.

Sources in Berlin and Paris justify the reservations regarding the decision to include the Revolutionary Guards in the terrorist list in "technical and procedural difficulties" to adopt such a decision.

However, behind this reasoning is actually Germany and France's fear of an escalation in the conflict with Iran.

The Iranian Foreign Minister, Amir Abdulahian, threatened this weekend that if the European Union includes the Revolutionary Guards in its terrorist list, Iran will cancel its membership in the international agreement on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Other senior Iranian officials have threatened in recent days that a European decision against the Revolutionary Guards will constitute a declaration of war and will lead Iran to see European military forces stationed in the Persian-Arabian Gulf region as hostile forces.

A decision regarding the inclusion of the Revolutionary Guards in the terrorist list should be made unanimously by all 27 European Union members.

It is estimated that Germany and France will eventually join the other countries in adopting a decision on the matter.

The Council of European Foreign Ministers will discuss the imposition of additional sanctions on Iran following the execution of demonstrators and the supply of drones to Russia.
