Today, the World Health Organization launched an appeal for $2.54 billion in funding to help people facing health emergencies around the world.
Reuters quoted WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus as saying, “More people than ever are facing the imminent threat of disease and famine and need help now,” noting that the world cannot ignore them, and hopes that these crises will resolve themselves.
The organization is responding to what it says are an unprecedented 54 health emergencies around the world, including the crisis in Ukraine, cholera and smallpox outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and malnutrition in Somalia.
Last year, the WHO launched an emergency appeal for the first time, seeking $3.15 billion.
