To the north of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges (Vosges), the abbeys of Senones and Moyenmoutier are turning the page on textiles, an industry that had invaded their walls and colonized their vast gardens.
The two rural municipalities are working at the beginning of the year on the final phase of restoration of this prestigious heritage: these two former monasteries founded in the 7th century drew, with Étival, Saint-Dié and Val-et-Châtillon, the Holy Monastic Cross of the Vosges.
“The sale of national property confiscated from the clergy during the French Revolution brought the abbeys into the fold of the textile industry. In Moyenmoutier, the inhabitants had ended up ignoring the very existence of this abbey on their communal bans as the workshops had concealed everything. During the first demolitions, some wondered whether they should cry with joy when they saw the abbey reappear, or with grief, because the factory fed many homes
