(CNN Spanish) --

The Attorney General of Mexico, Alejandro Gertz Manero, is recovering at home after a spinal surgery, which took place in a hospital in the United States, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reported on Monday.

"No, it's not cancer, according to my information, fortunately," López Obrador said in response to a journalist, during his daily morning conference.

The president thus clarified unfounded rumors that circulated in recent days about the health of the Mexican prosecutor, which attributed his absence from public activity for health reasons.

Since last week, information has circulated on social networks about the alleged seriousness of his state of health, and even the death of the politician, admitted to a hospital in Baltimore, United States, caused by pancreatic cancer.

“There has been a lot of speculation and a very, I don't want to use the word, I want to soften it, I would say, I'm going to use it, miserable, attitude around this matter because I saw a message on Twitter and there are many wishing him dead.

You can't wish that on anyone," added the president.

López Obrador said that the prosecutor is convalescing at home, from where he attends to his work at the Attorney General's Office.

“What can I tell you, that he underwent surgery on his back, on his spine, an infiltration, so he is at home, he is fine, he is recovering, he is even working and we wish him well, that he recover soon," said the president.

Rumors about the health of the prosecutor grew after his absence at the last X Summit of North American Leaders, which took place in Mexico City from January 9 to 11, where a meeting with his American counterpart, Merrick, was expected. B. Garland, to address the binational fiscal agenda.

But the foreign minister of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, told the press on January 10 that Gertz Manero did not attend the trilateral or bilateral meetings between Mexico, the United States and Canada, because "he was not notified in time" about the agenda. .

Gertz Manero became the Attorney General of Mexico in 2019, proposed by President López Obrador and confirmed by the Mexican Senate.

But his management has developed amid controversy.

Among his activity as a prosecutor, some controversies stand out, such as accusations against him of putting pressure on the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation in a family case that involved his ex-sister-in-law, Laura Morán, and her daughter, Alejandra Cuevas, whom accused of negligence, abandonment and lack of medical care that led to the death of his brother, Federico Gertz.

On March 28, 2022, the plenary session of the Supreme Court unanimously ordered the cancellation of an arrest warrant against Morán and the immediate release of Cuevas.

The magistrates considered that the evidence that demonstrated Morán's innocence was ignored and that it could not be verified that the woman had carried out different actions in the care of Federico Gertz.

On March 17, 2022, Gertz Manero told the senators during an appearance that he would respect the decision made by the full Supreme Court.
