Members of the opposition today (Monday) criticized Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid and the chairman of the state camp Benny Gantz, following the negotiation initiatives on the government's legal reform which they are trying to promote.

One of the attempts was Lapid's proposal to President Yitzhak Herzog, according to which a presidential committee would be established to formulate an alternative to the legal reform.

"To make proposals to Netanyahu, regardless of whether directly or through one or another intermediary, is to surrender to him," claimed Labor chairman Marev Michaeli. Israel Beitenu chairman Avigdor Lieberman said that "it is impossible to reach any compromise on the issue of judicial reform."

Lapid later responded to the criticism and said that he did not propose "any compromise" with the government, but rather the establishment of a committee that would take the issue out of the government's hands.

According to Lapid, the committee that he proposed to the president, "will form a real, balanced and considered proposal, to correct and improve the judicial system, and to regulate the relationship between the judiciary and the legislative authority."

The chairman of the state camp, Benny Gantz, also commented on the issue, saying, "I see the enormous impact of the public outcry and the demonstrations, and I'm starting to hear voices from among coalition officials who want to reach agreements and don't want to 'pour democracy with water'."

Criticized Lapid's proposal.

Following what the two said, Michaeli criticized them during a faction meeting.

"Two hundred thousand protesters do not want an independent committee, they do not want to negotiate with a defendant, and they are right," she said.

"To make proposals to Netanyahu, no matter if directly or through one or another intermediary, is to surrender to him. I am very, very disturbed by the voices that Gantz and Lapid are making. These are exactly the voices that our protesters oppose. These are exactly the voices that relax their hands and may make them stay at home." .

She added, "Yair, my son - there is no negotiation on the overcoming clause. There is no room for negotiation. Only with a determined and persistent struggle will we save the country and our democracy. We do not build leadership by giving in."

Later, Lieberman also opposed the move, calling on the opposition leaders: "Get out of the movie - it is impossible to reach any compromise on the issue of judicial reform. You say that the government wants to bring Israel to a 100% dictatorship,

So what compromise do you want?

50% dictatorship?"

Lapid responded to criticism from his partners in the opposition and said: "Minutes after I presented my proposal to establish a presidential committee to protect the legal system from the disaster that the government is trying to bring upon it, the headlines and the sayings that 'Lapid offers a compromise with the government' came out. Not only is this not true, my proposal said exactly The opposite!

"I proposed to take the issue out of the hands of a criminal government that has foreign interests, and transfer it to an independent public committee that the president would establish.

Such a presidential committee will gain the public's trust and will also stop the destructive process in which a prime minister with serious criminal indictments and ministers convicted of serious crimes dismantle the Israeli justice system and trample our entire democratic structure.

A presidential committee will see this as its duty to maintain the separation of powers, the independence of the court and the rule of law.

All the things that the current government is trying to dismantle and smash.

"You can disagree with this solution, but whoever says that this is a proposal to 'compromise with the government' either did not understand the proposal, or understood it and is lying for political reasons. Both things are inappropriate," he said.
