Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar said this morning (Monday) that he does not intend to cancel events or deny funding to cultural institutions operating on Shabbat, and claimed that this is a "false media spin".
This, despite the fact that yesterday he wrote on Twitter that he instructed his office staff to examine the "Israeli Shabbat" program, which is held on Shabbat and thus "discriminates" against the Shabbat-observant public.
Minister Zohar claimed that his predecessor in the position, Hili Trooper, violated the status quo, and he is returning the situation to the way it was before.
"I made it clear unequivocally that we will preserve the status quo and the freedom of the citizens of Israel and, among other things, I also made it clear that I will not interfere in the holding of the football games on Saturday," he explained.
"There is a status quo in Israel which, unfortunately, the outgoing minister violated in the last year, and for the first time in the history of the Ministry of Culture, he decided to actively initiate an activity that takes place specifically on Shabbat, which has never happened before."
The minister also stated that "just as no official government body in Israel initiates an activity on Shabbat, neither does the Ministry of Culture and Sports initiate an activity on Shabbat. This has always been the case and will continue to be. Needless to say, there is an unequal act here that discriminates against a huge part of the public. Of course, in Israel there are and will continue to be There will be many cultural events on Shabbat that the ministry budgets for and will continue, but we will not initiate them."
