Debate on tank supplies to Ukraine

The debate over the delivery of Leopard main battle tanks to Ukraine is moving.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock

told French broadcaster LCI on Sunday that Germany would not block the export of Leopard tanks from third countries to Ukraine.

"We have not been asked so far and (...) if we were asked, we would not stand in the way," said the Green politician (you can find out more about this here).

Baerbock answered the question of what would happen if Poland delivered Leopard tanks to Ukraine.

In order to supply German tanks to other countries, Germany actually has to approve it.

Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki

had announced that he would, if necessary, deliver Leopard tanks to Ukraine without Germany's consent.

He told the PAP news agency on Sunday: “We will not stand by and watch Ukraine bleed dry.

Ukraine and Europe will win this war – with or without Germany.«

Even after the Franco-German summit in Paris on Sunday, Chancellor Olaf Scholz

(SPD) still did not indicate when he would make his decision on the delivery of German battle tanks to Ukraine and what he would make it dependent on.

Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius

(SPD) said in the ARD program "Anne Will" that everyone understands the distress Ukraine is currently in.

That's why "there will soon be a decision, whatever it looks like".

It depends "on many factors" and is "made in the Chancellery".

Referring to Morawiecki's criticism that Germany's hesitation was "unacceptable," Pistorius said: "Putting blame doesn't help anyone."

SPD parliamentary group leader Dirk Wiese

protects Scholz against criticism from within the coalition.

“Within the traffic light coalition, we are working together constructively and in a coordinated manner in this challenging situation under the leadership of Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

However, one should not overestimate individual deviations," he told the "Rheinische Post".

"Rather, you should keep your nerve now and generally not make decisions on the basis of gut instinct."

That says Kyiv

Following the corruption scandals in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced more decisive action against misconduct in the state apparatus.

"Society will get all the information and the state will take the necessary powerful steps," he said in his video message on Sunday.

Among other things, Zelenskyy informed that the detained Deputy Minister for the Development of Municipalities, Territories and Infrastructure Vasyl Losynskyi had been released.

According to media reports, he is said to have received the equivalent of around 368,000 euros in bribes for the purchase of generators to deal with the country's energy crisis.

The Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Resnikov has also become the focus of corruption allegations.

According to a newspaper report, the military allegedly procured food at greatly inflated prices.

Reznikov's defense ministry denies this.

A parliamentary committee is investigating the allegations.

Zelenskyi announced decisions for the coming week that have already been taken but have not yet been published in order to further combat corruption and enrichment in office.

"I'm grateful to the journalists who deal with the facts and create the whole picture," he said of the revelations.

Moscow says so

A Russian warship armed with the latest hypersonic sea missiles will take part in joint military exercises with China and South Africa in February.

This was announced by the Russian state news agency Tass on Monday.

Hypersonic weapons fly at extremely high speeds, sometimes significantly exceeding the speed of sound of a good 340 meters per second.

The weapons remain manoeuvrable, so their direction can still be adjusted after launch.

The Russian frigate "Admiral Gorshkov" with the Zircon missiles will first go to Syria and then take part in the military exercises, Tass has now reported.

South Africa said on Thursday the exercises would last from February 17th to 27th and take place near the port cities of Durban and Richards Bay.

They aimed to "strengthen the already thriving relations between South Africa, Russia and China."

International reactions

According to Norwegian estimates, almost 180,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or injured in the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine.

On the Ukrainian side, more than 100,000 soldiers are believed to be dead or wounded, said Chief of Staff Eirik Kristoffersen in an interview with Norwegian broadcaster TV2 on Sunday.

In addition, 30,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed so far.

The general did not explain how the numbers came about.

Despite heavy losses, Russia is able to continue this war "for quite a long time," said Kristoffersen - and referred to Moscow's mobilization and weapons production capacities.

What is happening today

  • Starting around 11:30 a.m. today, the Bundeswehr will begin deploying the first two of the three promised Patriot missile defense systems from Gnoien (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) to Poland.

The systems are to be deployed in the vicinity of the city of Zamość in south-eastern Poland.

From there it is around 60 kilometers to the Ukrainian border and 110 kilometers to the Ukrainian city of Lviv (Lemberg).

According to the Bundeswehr, the aim of the transfer is to help protect Polish airspace and strengthen NATO's eastern flank.

Bundeswehr soldiers have been on site in Poland since January 16 to ensure that the components of the weapon system are installed together with the Polish alliance partners.

  • The foreign ministers of the EU countries want to discuss the latest developments in the Russian war of aggression from 10 a.m. in Brussels.

Among other things, it should be about increasing military aid for Ukraine - a further tranche of 500 million euros for joint arms purchases for Ukraine is under discussion.

A video conference with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba could also deal with Kiev's demand for German Leopard battle tanks.
