Is the surcharge for vacuum cleaners without a cable worth it? It depends, says Stiftung Warentest. After all: Both with and without, there are several models that are convincing in the test - only one fails.

If you need a new vacuum cleaner, you are spoiled for choice.

In the current issue of the magazine "test", the experts from Stiftung Warentest tested nine devices with a battery and ten classic models with a cable.

What connects both product classes: The best also cost the most money.

According to Stiftung Warentest, the cordless vacuum cleaner, the Miele Triflex HX2 Sprinter, costs 675 euros.

The Bosch BSS825CARP, after all the price winner, only costs about 60 euros less.

In the test, both devices performed "well", the Bosch vacuum cleaner with a grade of 2.4 was only 0.1 points worse than the Miele model.

The cheapest product in the test, the Severin HV7187, failed: It sucked "poorly" in six out of nine disciplines.

According to the Stiftung Warentest, cordless vacuum cleaners under 300 euros are "hard to use" anyway.

the essentials in brief

The experts at Stiftung Warentest recommend asking yourself three questions: How annoying are cables?

Are 400 euros extra manageable?

Do you have to vacuum pet hair off the carpet?

Cordless vacuum cleaners cost significantly more, but also suck pet hair from the flokati.

If you want a cheaper device, aren't bothered by a cable and don't have a furry pet, you should choose a cable vacuum cleaner.

AreaWith bag or without?open

Bagless vacuum cleaners have long been more expensive than those with bags.

It's over.

According to Stiftung Warentest, both variants have advantages and disadvantages: Dust bags can be emptied more hygienically, but you also have to have replacements on hand.

In addition, the suction power decreases before the bag is filled with dust.

With the bagless ones

Models are easier to tell when they are full.

But there is more dust at the garbage can.

For both variants, the professional testers recommend cleaning and changing the exhaust air and motor filters separately.

AreaWhich vacuum cleaners use the least electricity?open

According to Stiftung Warentest, cordless vacuum cleaners are generally more economical than corded devices.

In the test, cable vacuums require around 50 percent more watt hours for an identical area than battery-powered models.

In the test, however, there were also clear differences within the two groups.

A tip from the experts: If you only vacuum dust from the parquet, you should turn down the power.

This significantly reduces power consumption.

In general, the cordless vacuum cleaners have a hard time with so-called coarse material such as lentils or rice, but they are convincing on carpets.

A plus: All cordless devices tested can be converted into compact hand-held vacuum cleaners to remove dust from upholstered furniture, bookshelves and car seats.

Compared to cable vacuum cleaners, the cordless devices are relatively loud, say the testers.

In return, they would consume comparatively little electricity.

The Miele Triflex HX2 Sprinter is particularly economical.

The model is therefore not only the test winner among the cordless vacuum cleaners, but also the environmental tip.

Cable vacuum cleaners are cheaper.

Unfortunately, the best are also the most expensive here: The test winner with a dust bag, the Miele Complete C3 Starlight EcoLine, costs around 340 euros.

If you prefer to suck the dirt into a dust box without a bag, you have to pay around 261 euros for the Bosch BGC41XSIL.

Both models perform »well«.

The price tip from Stiftung Warentest is also »good«, but cheaper: the Rowenta Silence Force Allergy+ RO7755.

The Rowenta model scores particularly well on hard floors, which, like upholstery and cracks, is generally a strength of the cable vacuum cleaner.

Some models have a hard time on carpet, but according to the testers, the best ones do "good".

If you want to vacuum up your pets' hair, you should still buy a cordless model.

Compared to cordless tools, the cable models are a bit quieter, but also heavier.

Since they mostly roll over the floor, this is not a problem.

Only those who often have to balance their device in a cupboard should consider this when buying.
