A recent episode in Berlin political life sums up Olaf Scholz's management of the coalition government, particularly with regard to defense issues where his Green allies occupy a folding seat.
When on 3 January, the day after a final media blunder, former SPD Minister of Defense Christine Lambrecht informed the Chancellor of her intention to leave her post, the latter did not inform any of his ministers, not putting in the confidence that his four associates of the SPD: the two presidents of the party, the very influential leader of the social democratic fraction in the Bundestag, Rolf Mützenich, as well as the head of the chancellery, Wolfgang Schmidt, his liegeman from Hamburg, the political stronghold of the head of government.
Within the government, the identity of the new Chief of Defense, Boris Pistorius, himself a pure product of the SPD, close to former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, a friend of Vladimir Putin, was kept secret until January 17. .
