In the Committee for the Promotion of the Status of Women it was decided that two strip clubs in Tel Aviv will close by the end of next month. During the discussion, the general director of the strippers' union created a commotion that necessitated her removal

The Committee for the Advancement of Women's Status and Gender Equality convened today (Tuesday) for a meeting on the topic "The return to the activity of strip clubs and "lap dance" dances against the law".

The chairperson of the committee, MK Pnina Tamno-Shata, opened the committee's discussion and said: "According to the headquarters for the fight against trafficking in women and prostitution, there are currently three strip clubs operating in Tel Aviv - the Shindo Club, the Bonchichi Club and the Bursa/Velvet Club. Unfortunately, Evidence has recently been published about the repeated activity of places where the practice of exploiting women takes place, and in fact carrying out activities that are now defined as prostitution, under the cover of strip clubs. It is important to understand that, for girls and women in distress, many times these places are a gateway to the world of disgraceful sexual exploitation."

At the hearing, the chairman of the committee, MK Tamno-Sheta, demanded from the police to increase enforcement and covert and overt activity in order for the phenomenon to stop: "Activate detectives and hidden cameras."

A ruling that should come into effect on January 29, and then the order to close one of the clubs can be enforced, and the order to close the other club starting on February 14.

MK Iman Khatib Yassin said that: "These clubs are the first step to prostitution.

Women who come there come from a difficult economic and social situation.

We cannot as a legislature neglect this thing and leave it on the shoulders and capabilities of the local authority.

If there is no constitutional anchor that backs up her actions, we will go backwards."

During the discussion, Lena Devine, a survivor of prostitution, gave a chilling testimony, revealing how she was thrown into the world of prostitution from a young age: "In my adulthood, I worked in most strip clubs. I respect women's right to their bodies and know the different voices in the field. I also spoke like that when I was a stripper. A lot It is easier to admit that I chose to live on the margins than to admit that I am a victim. Unlike the brothels, the strip clubs are located in inviting places with the message that women can be bought. The women who were sexually abused in their childhood and led into the circle of prostitution, like me, are the majority."

Efrat Rubinstein, CEO of the Strippers' Union, answered boldly: "Today privileged women are going to fight less privileged women for their jobs.

There are another 30 women outside the Knesset who want to continue earning a living and were not allowed to enter.

You don't let the women who work in the field tell you the truth.

We, sitting here, see the work as art and self-expression.

There is a coercive act of persecution against us.

We are women in the State of Israel.

One of the women here funded computer science studies.

The veterans were able to buy apartments and escape violent spouses.

We don't have spokespeople and a sponsored lobby."

Shani Nardimon, a rehabilitative criminologist: "I worked and managed a program for young people in prostitution and there I was exposed to the world of stripping as a caregiver. All the studies prove that wherever you can touch there is the temptation to enter prostitution. What pushes the temptation to prostitution is 'how much money I make'. Some girls will not cross these boundaries And they won't go into prostitution, but most of the girls are flexible about the boundaries and there is competition. There are clubs that have maintained that there will be no contact and there are some that have less. Everyone I interviewed did sexual acts in private rooms. In the clubs I met single girls who were minors. 93 percent suffer from abuse by their partners today."

MK Mati Sarfati thinks that "as a society there are occupations that are better off not taking place.

One of our roles is to prevent the objectification of women and not any job as it should exist.

As legislators we need to promote legislation because right now the law is vague.

If I ask myself do I want one of my children to be a stripper or a consumer in such a club?

I answer myself no." MK Yoav Seglovitz: "Not everything needs to be dealt with by criminal enforcement, the question at the basis of the discussion is to what extent the state intervenes and if so, what are the right and proportional ways to intervene."

Former member of the Knesset Shuli Moalem agrees: "Clubs are the main door to the world of prostitution. The women in prostitution come from difficult life stories and are exploited. Striptease is part of organized crime. We all remember the Posikt club, which we're glad was closed. Upstairs was a striptease club, but downstairs there were also private rooms And prostitution right in front of our eyes."

Attorney Ilit Midan from the State Attorney's Office: "In the videos we saw acts of sexual prostitution that took place in clubs before the directive was amended.

We knew that the Penal Code does not define an act of prostitution and the amendment was intended to regulate from the ruling what an act of prostitution is and we tried to distill as a prosecutor whether an act of prostitution is taking place before our eyes.

The guideline that prostitution is sexual contact for payment.

The lap dance is a sub-case in the act of prostitution and stripping is not prohibited by law, and if there is no contact it is not an act of prostitution."

Towards the end of the hearing, after being warned numerous times by the chairman that she was disturbing, the director general of the strippers' union was asked to leave the committee room. She refused. To do so, she was removed by the Knesset ushers while shouting and using force against them.

The chairman of the committee, MK Tamnou Sheta, concluded the discussion: "As long as the systems are oriented, we manage to deal with such phenomena. If there is a relaxation, then we see that the transgressor succeeds in acting and inciting prostitution. I ask what will we do? Activate detectives and hidden cameras. This should not remain One minute open. We are a small country and know how to count the clubs on one hand. When the police want, they can establish a specific section. I ask that you act actively and proactively."
