All-time record for car exports from China

2023-01-24T05:38:17.916Z

The Chinese automobile industry continues its global expansion, with more than 2.2 million vehicles exported from China in the past year. Among the factors for growth: an increase in demand for electric cars

The invasion of the Chinese automobile industry into the western markets and the whole world is already a fait accompli.

However, data published by Automotive News reveal that the volume of exports of cars made in China increased significantly in the past year, with an all-time record that is expected to be broken next year.

In the past year, more than 2.2 million vehicles, including trucks and buses, were exported from China to the rest of the world.

This is an increase of 54% compared to the corresponding period in 2021. The most significant factor for the jump in the export of vehicles in China is the transition and the growing demand for electric cars.

Here the Chinese bring to light their advantage in material availability and battery production.

China exported almost 350,000 electric cars in the first three quarters of this year to the whole world, while 60% of the world's electric cars are sold in China.

In Europe, where more than 1.8 million electric cars were sold in the same period, 11 percent of all electric cars are made in China.

Here you have to remember that despite the impressive numbers, not all the cars coming from China are from Chinese manufacturers.

Quite a few Western car manufacturers use collaborations with local manufacturers in the production of models, while taking advantage of the relatively low production costs compared to Western factories and the availability of components such as batteries and chips.

The leading Western manufacturer in exports from China is Tesla, which since the beginning of the year has exported more than 165,000 cars from the factory in Shanghai to the world.

It is joined by other brands, from Volvo to Volkswagen and BMW.

The most prominent Chinese manufacturer in exports is SAIC, which owns several brands, including MG, through which it will export more than 78,000 cars in 2022.

BYD, which just started operations in Europe and Israel in the middle of the year, has already exported 22,000 cars.

Only recently was a study published by the strategic consulting company PwC which claims that by 2025, 800,000 cars produced in China will be sold in Europe, with more than half of them being cars of Chinese brands.

This may not sound like much in absolute terms for a market whose size is about 12 million cars per year, but the rate of growth is definitely starting to worry the old European manufacturers who are focused on the home markets.
