Jeremy Weir, a
retired
school principal who describes himself as a treasure hunter, found
a bottle with a message
inside on January 15 that had been floating in a US river for four decades.

Weir himself commented on his social networks that he is always "hunting for treasures (old bottles, old pieces of wood, sea glass, fossils, etc.)", reports

"While hunting that afternoon, I found an
old Grolsch beer bottle
with a ceramic cap" in the Pearl River, Mississippi.
"I brought it home and started to clean it, when I noticed something on it. I opened it and found a plastic bag inside with
a note inside
," he recounted.
The 1983 note
Upon reading the note, he was able to verify that it was written
almost 40 years ago
, precisely on June 4, 1983, and it read as follows: "To the discoverer of my mysterious bottle, my name is David Blanks. I live in Jackson, Mississippi.
I have 3 years old.
If you find my bottle, please call me at (601) 956-5378 (call collect). Good luck and happy hunting!"
"I opened it and found a plastic bag inside with a note inside," said the man who found it (Facebook).
Weir said that after searching for Blanks online and finding nothing, he and his wife and daughter discovered that the number on the note was
a landline
that his parents still used and were able to finally find his contact, he says.

"So we called him and, of course, he was amazed that we had found that bottle 39 and a half years later," Weir told the
Sun Herald
newspaper .
"To the discoverer of my mystery bottle, my name is David Blanks..." (Facebook).
"We talked to him and his wife and told him what was going on. Of course they were ecstatic. He didn't remember, of course, he was 3 years old," says

Also, a cousin of Blanks told him that the bottle was thrown much further south from where he found it.
"How she got so far north, who knows. Sure, she's been floating around for 40 years," Weir concluded.
