A serious trend: a 91% increase in youth involved in crimes and abuse of their peers Israel today

The 2021 report of the Chief Accountant of the Ministry of Social Affairs shows a discouraging picture of an increase in the number of reports of harm to children and teenagers • An increase in cases of physical abuse of minors and the number of injuries inside the home



The Ministry of Welfare and Social Security published this morning (Tuesday) the report of the chief prosecutor for 2021. The report indicates a sharp increase of 91% in youth involved in crimes.

The report shows that in 2021 there was a 7% increase in physical abuse of teenagers and children and a 6% increase in the number of injuries within the family.

The report of the chief prosecutor under the Youth Law has been published since 2015 and includes all reports of harm to children and youth received by social workers for the Youth Law, from most of the local authorities in Israel. The report shows that in 2021, 59,533 inquiries and reports were received on suspicion of abuse, harm or neglect that raise alleged evidence Because these are children and teenagers who need the intervention of welfare services - this is an increase of 8% compared to 2020. Out of all referrals - 52% of the victims are boys and 48% are girls.

The data also shows that the highest number of reports was for physical abuse - 13,117 in number (about 21%).

About 11,771 reports dealt with harming children with disabilities.

The report also indicates a 2.5% increase in the number of reports of suspected abuse between siblings - 1,938 cases in 2021. Complaints about sexual abuse of minors are also on the rise: 5,866 reports in 2021, an increase of 6.5% compared to 2020.
