Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich published an order this evening (Tuesday) canceling the purchase tax on sugary drinks, at the end of about a year in which it was in effect.

This, in the expectation that the abolition of the tax will lower the price of the products for the consumer.



The minister announced the cancellation of the tax at the beginning of the month, a few days after taking office.

The tax that is expected to be canceled will enter into force on January 1, 2022, in accordance with the previous government's decision on the matter - which declared the issue of promoting a "healthy lifestyle".

Currently, drinks with five grams of sugar per 100 ml or more are subject to a purchase tax of NIS 1.07 per liter of drink, NIS 6.46 per liter of concentrate, and NIS 6.46 per kilogram of powder. On drinks with less than five grams of sugar per 100 ml , fruit juices and drinks with a non-sugar sweetener - a purchase tax of NIS 0.76 per liter of drink, NIS 4.53 per liter of concentrate and NIS 4.53 per kilogram of powder is imposed.
