Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister resigns amid corruption allegations

By Kostan Nechyporenko

Ukraine's Deputy Defense Minister Vyacheslav Shapovalov has resigned following allegations of corruption in the media.

Shapovalov submitted his resignation after a "campaign of accusations related to the acquisition of food supplies (from the Armed Forces of Ukraine)," according to a statement from the ministry, which called the accusations "unfounded and baseless."

The minister was responsible for the logistics of the Armed Forces, according to the statement.

In his resignation letter, Shapovalov said he was leaving so as not to distract from the war effort.

"Due to the large public outcry, largely caused by unfounded manipulations around the issue of supplying the Armed Forces of Ukraine, there is a risk of destabilizing the army's supply processes. This is unacceptable during the war with Russia." , reads the letter.

"In this situation, the priority is to ensure the stable work of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and create conditions for transparent and impartial inspections by security forces and other authorized bodies."

UK Defense Ministry says Russian general 'likely' to be ousted from key role in Ukraine

A senior Russian general who oversaw the withdrawal of Moscow forces from the Kherson region of southern Ukraine two months ago has "probably" been sacked as a key operational commander in the war, according to the Defense Ministry. British.

In an intelligence update on Twitter, the British ministry said that General Colonel Mikhail Teplinsky "was the officer on the ground in charge of Russia's relatively successful withdrawal from the west of the Dnipro [river] in November 2022, and has received praise in Russia as a capable and pragmatic commander".

"There is a realistic possibility that the debate over the tasks entrusted to the VDV has contributed to their dismissal: The VDV have often been employed in ground containment roles traditionally assigned to mechanized infantry," the British ministry stated.

The British ministry said Teplinsky's removal could be a sign of discord within the Russian military hierarchy amid Moscow's faltering campaign following the appointment of General Valery Gerasimov as commanding general in early January.

"Teplinsky's dismissal is probably another symptom of continuing divisions within the senior ranks of the Russian operation, as General Valery Gerasimov tries to impose his personal authority on the campaign," the ministry said.

CNN has been unable to independently verify the British ministry's claims.
