Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in Germany.

Per capita consumption rises to a new record all-time high and climbed to 169 liters per year in 2021, according to the

coffee consumption study by the German Coffee Association "So trinkt Deutschland Kaffee 2021"

  • The biggest growth driver in 2021 was therefore the whole coffee bean.

Due to the pandemic, many households brought a high-quality fully automatic coffee machine into their home.

The whole bean now has a market share of 41 percent and is thus approaching the classic coffee machines for filter coffee.

Fully automatic coffee machines are not that expensive, there are also good fully automatic coffee machines for less than 500 euros.

Consumption within your own four walls is also increasing: around four out of five cups of coffee are drunk at home.

For this reason, the quality and taste of the coffee is becoming increasingly important.

Stiftung Warentest tested coffee beans for espresso and caffè crema.

The result: There are many good pick-me-ups, but two Italian suppliers in particular are recommended for espresso.

What is the difference between espresso and caffè crema?

Caffè crema originally comes from Switzerland and is a large cup of coffee prepared in the espresso style.

It's not just the quantity that makes the difference between an espresso and a caffè crema.

The roasting and preparation of the coffee beans also play a crucial role.

Coffee beans for the espresso are roasted longer and darker.

The degree of grinding of espresso beans is also significantly finer than that of caffè crema.

Accordingly, an espresso also has a much stronger aroma, while caffè crema tastes similar to coffee for filter machines.

What types of coffee are there?

Well over 100 types of coffee are known on the world market, but only two are relevant:

    • Arabica:

The aroma is considered particularly fine and contains less caffeine than Robusta coffee.

The taste is milder and is softer.

    • Robusta:

With this type of coffee, the name says it all.

In fact, Robusta coffee is actually more robust.

Accordingly, Robusta is considered to be tart and less oily than Arabica.

Arabica and Robusta – both are combined in an espresso

Both known types of coffee are combined in an espresso.

Robusta is considered the pick-me-up and is added to Arabica in coffee blends and espresso.

Arabica coffee is considered a flavor carrier due to its production.

    How should you store coffee?

The packaging of the coffee is usually sufficient to be able to store it as well as possible.

Choose a place where the coffee can be stored in a dark, airtight, dry and cool place.

The refrigerator is not suitable for storing coffee due to its humidity and the many other aromas.

If the packaging is not airtight, we recommend a 🛒 coffee can.

These are particularly stylish and give the coffee an extra dose of extravagance.

But be careful: loose beans should not be filled into a can.

Because decanting the coffee beans comes into contact with oxygen, heat and moisture.

This can distort the taste of the coffee.

We therefore recommend a large coffee can, in which the beans and their original packaging fit.
