According to the latest crime figures in Lyon released by the Rhône prefecture, violent thefts decreased by 11% in 2022 compared to 2021 (3,766 incidents in 2022 compared to 4,219 in 2021).

A positive result obtained thanks to the reinforced presence of the security forces on the public highway since this summer

”, comments the prefecture.

Overall, many indicators show an encouraging trend in the Rhône department.

Violence against people in public transport has fallen by 25% over the year and by 37% since September.

Regarding the fight against urban rodeos, the number of vehicle seizures has tripled with 381 seizures in 2022 against 122 the previous year while the number of procedures for rodeos has fallen by 19%.

With regard to drug trafficking, the number of traffickers implicated (1,237 against 914) increased by more than a third (+35%) and the number of fixed criminal fines for possession or use of narcotics by nearly 39% (5526 in 2022 against 3965 in 2021).

The number of deal points decreased by 9% in 2022. In all, 8.4 tonnes of cannabis, 140 kg of heroin, 146.6 kg of cocaine and more than 12.6 million euros were seized during the past year.

Vehicle theft on the rise

However, some points seem more negative.

Vehicle thefts increased by 9% last year despite a downward trend at the end of the year, and burglaries by 17%.

In a press release, Grégory Doucet the mayor of Lyon nevertheless "

welcomed the mobilization and the daily commitment of the national and municipal police officers

".

The work undertaken over the past two years to guarantee security is beginning to bear fruit

,” he added.

For their part, the municipal police unions confirm a certain improvement linked to the increased presence of police officers in the field.

There is a definite effort from the national police with a lot more patrols.

It is to be welcomed because there had not been any for years.

It is particularly very obvious in the Guillotière district

, ”confides to

Le Figaro

Bertrand D., deputy national secretary FO Municipal Police.

Unions still cautious

However, the reality of the increase in staff seems more contrasted, according to a national police officer who prefers to remain anonymous: “

We still have an effective problem in Lyon.

Yes there are arrivals but also departures.

At the start of the year, we have 50 staff who have left to work in the administrative detention center for example and who have not been replaced

”.

And to add: "

In the end today we have fewer field crews, fewer means of investigation

".

In all, 300 police officers have arrived in the Lyon conurbation over the past two years and a second mobile force unit has been assigned to the territory.

If the city of Lyon has been asking for the balance of national police personnel from the prefecture for several months, the latter has for the moment always refused to make it public.

Regarding the interventions of the municipal police, Bertrand D. assures "

that they have not necessarily decreased

".

And unfortunately we are seeing ever more violent facts

,” he laments.

A reality shared by his colleague from the national police: “

Many of our interventions are tougher.

And on the decrease in violent thefts, we include what we want in this category.

It ranges from someone pushing you to get your bag to someone punching you to rob you.

To which must be added the great difficulty in filing a complaint at present because of the lack of staff

”.
